A new social enterprise supporting youth training and community connection
We are pleased to announce the official opening of the Understory Community Café, taking place this Friday, 12 December, from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Located at the rear of the Northcliffe Visitor Centre, the café represents a significant step in our commitment to building opportunities for young people while enhancing the visitor experience in Northcliffe.
The Understory Community Café is a community-owned social enterprise that provides high-quality coffee and refreshments for visitors, while also supporting upskilling, barista training, and offering meaningful work experience to local young people.
In early November, we completed our first round of barista training, equipping a new team of young local baristas with foundational skills and hands-on experience. Since mid-November, the coffee van has been gradually introduced to the community through a soft launch period, giving visitors the opportunity to meet the trainees and experience the café in its early stages. Their enthusiasm, dedication and steady growth have shaped the character of the Understory Community Café as we prepare for the official opening.
Every purchase made at the café directly contributes to youth training, community development and ongoing creative initiatives in the region. Through this model, a simple cup of coffee becomes a way for visitors to invest in local skills development and help strengthen opportunities for the next generation.
To mark the launch, the first nineteen visitors who photograph their coffee with the Understory setting in the background, share it on social media and tag us, will receive their first drink free. This acknowledges the nineteen years since the Understory trail first welcomed visitors.
We look forward to welcoming you to the official launch of the Understory Community Café and to seeing this new social-enterprise initiative continue to support both our community and the visitor experience.
