Installed in the Understory Garden Gallery earlier this year, Whispers of Rain is a sculptural work by artist Daniel Fisher, commissioned as part of Southern Forest Arts’ Rivers of Thirst project.
The sculpture reflects on water as a vital and fragile presence — essential to life, culture, and community. Through its form and placement, Whispers of Rain invites quiet reflection on the impact of drought and climate change, particularly within regional and rural landscapes, while also honouring resilience, adaptation, and hope.
The name Whispers of Rain was selected through a community naming competition, with the winning title submitted by Rose Ferrell of Pemberton. Her response was chosen for its ability to beautifully capture the spirit and symbolism of the work, highlighting the importance of community voices in shaping shared cultural spaces.
As a permanent installation, the sculpture continues to act as a catalyst for conversation — encouraging visitors to consider water’s role in sustaining ecosystems, communities, and futures yet to come.
This project was supported by Foundations for Rural and Regional Renewal, the Future Drought Fund, the Regional Arts Fund, Regional Arts WA, Regional Arts Australia, and the Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries.
