Understory is located in Northcliffe – a small town in the heart of the Southern Forests & Valleys region within Western Australia.
Location
The Understory trail is situated adjacent to the centre of Northcliffe and meanders through Northcliffe Forest Park. The Park is a conservation reserve.
Entry to understory is through the Northcliffe Visitor Centre located in the middle of town.

By car
Northcliffe is approximately a 4 hour drive south of Perth. It is two hours west of Margaret River and 3 hours east of Albany.
By bus
TransWA operates a bus service between Northcliffe and Perth and Northcliffe and Albany six days a week.
By foot
Northcliffe is located on the Bibbulmun Track.
By bike
Northcliffe is located on the Munda Biddi Trail.

What to Bring
- We recommend covered shoes and a water bottle for you visit.
- On warm sunny days, wear a hat & sunscreen. Approximately half the trail is under the forest canopy so there is some protection from the sun.
- In wet weather, BYO raincoat and umbrella. [We do have a few umbrellas you can borrow if required].
- On days of strong winds/storm warnings the trail is closed to ensure visitor safety.
ACCOMMODATION
Jarrah Bridge Cottage
Jarrah Bridge Cottage is a newly renovated, cozy 1 bedroom cottage overlooking paddocks and tall trees on our working family farm. The circular driveway entrance provides ample space for those towing boats or caravans. The bedroom offers a comfortable queen bed and a set of bunkbeds. The kitchenette includes a fridge, stovetop and microwave, as well as toaster, kettle and usual kitchen utensils. Relax in the living area in front of our cozy fireplace or outdoors on the back verandah as you look out on the animals grazing in the paddocks.
Jarrah Bridge Cottage is a standalone building, about 50m from the farm house, where guests can enjoy their privacy. Guests are welcome to access our property – including the gardens, the paddocks and the bush at the back. We just ask that you respect our land and our animals and leave gates as you found them. Please also understand that children are to be supervised at all times as we have several dams and creeks throughout the property.
Northcliffe Lodge
Northcliffe Lodge was built in 2006 by designer and owner builder Shaine Middleton, and is located 2 kms south of Northcliffe. The unique Lodge rests on 10 acres of native bushland and backs onto the Karri Forest. It’s also conveniently located 450meters from the Bibbulmun track and is perfect for track walkers who want a night of comfort in a cosy bed.
There are two rooms two choose from, The Deluxe Suite, and The Treetop Apartment. Both have one queen size bed plus a private ensuite. We want our guests to enjoy peaceful seclusion. Our policy is to block the other room out if you book just one room so that guests who don’t know each other are not here at the same time.
Northcliffe Bush Camp
Come and enjoy peaceful, free-range and pet-friendly camping at Northcliffe Bush Camp. Just 3.9km from town you can have a campfire during the unrestricted season (March to October). Nature based Campground; hot showers, flushing toilets, BBQs, camp kitchen, powered and free-range sites, 7 dams, walk trails, and pet friendly (used to be called SID’s CampGround). Low rates. northcliffe nature park
A nature based caravan park/ camping ground that caters for fully self contained travellers. Dogs are welcome. Large sites, bush walks, bird watching, native plants, rural outlook.
Northcliffe holiday Park
Located at 190 Muirillup Road, 1.5 km east of the town of Northcliffe ideally situated in 100 acres of Karri and Jarrah Forest. Northcliffe Holiday Park is a friendly, tranquil site with nature at your door step. We have a self contained chalet, comfortable, modern and private for a get away in the forest. There is plenty of room for your own caravan, to pitch a tent, or hire an on site van. 2 campers kitchens available.
We have extended our hospitality to visitors from around the world. Activities include bush walking, mountain biking, bird watching, wild flowers in season and feeding Alpaca’s and kangaroos at their feeding stations. Northcliffe Forest Park is adjacent to the property. This unique park is renowned for its virgin Karri forest and native flora. Highlights are the Hollow Butt Tree, Twin Karri’s and meandering walks through the forest.
Pippin vale
An old timber workers cottage at the Old Mill settlement just out of Northcliffe surounded by tall karri and jarrah trees, with an open fire and jarrah floors. We also have our new GLAM tent and outdoor shower. Enjoy optional home cooked dinners, breakfasts and platters after a day of experiencing the amazing natural surrounds of Northcliffe and the D’Entrecasteaux National Park coastal areas.
Tiddely Pom
Tiddely Pom offers recently renovated accommodation where one can experience the peace and quiet of the unique seaside village of Windy Harbour. Relax on the sunny north-facing deck or sit and watch the birds feeding on the bottle brush from the shaded south-facing veranda. The beach is a short walk away.

Have breakfast overlooking the sea! Sheerwater is one of only 219 houses nestled within the D’Entrecasteaux National Park. Sheerwater is the only cottage available as holiday accommodation with ocean views at Windy Harbour. An open plan living area overlooks the Southern Ocean and Sandy Island. The kitchen is well appointed, allowing for the fact there is no mains power, only a generator. Three bedrooms have accommodation for up to 6 people.

27 km from Northciffe, on the coast, surrounded by D’Entrecasteaux National Park, the Windy Harbour camp ground is a true gem. Windy Harbour has a boat ramp and, neighbouring that, a reasonably well protected beach which locals use for swimming. The campground is behind the dunes, somewhat protected from Windy Harbour’s namesake afternoon winds, the campground features lush grass, hot showers, a camp kitchen, campfire areas and a convenience shop. 6 powered sites and a number of unpowered sites. Dogs and other animals are not permitted. Quiet generators are welcome between 11am and 11pm at unpowered sites. An onsite caretaker has the authority to request generators are turned off.
