A groundbreaking fusion of art, science, and conservation will be unveiled at the Northcliffe Information & Visitor Centre on Saturday 8 March, with the official launch of the Genestreaming Journey Sculpture. This sculpture marks the first installation in the new Understory Garden Gallery, a significant step forward in the establishment of this up and coming cultural tourism attraction.
The Genestreaming Journey Sculpture initiative is dedicated to bringing science andculture together through art to promote conservation awareness. This newinstallation in Northcliffe will be a key addition to the Gondwana Link Genestreaming Journey Sculpture trail (which runs throughout locations nationwide) which is designed to connect communities, celebrate local ecosystems, and inspire action to protect the environment.
Spearheaded by Menang Elder Aunty Carol Pettersen OAM and artist Ben Beeton of the Art of Nature School and SciArt, the project highlights the deep-time connections between First Nations knowledge and contemporary ecological science.
Each sculpture tells a twofold story; First Nations art on the exterior reflects cultural connections to Country, while scientific illustrations on the interior showcase local ecosystems, endangered species, and the environmental challenges we face today.
Fiona Sinclair, Artistic Director and General Manager of Southern Forest Arts, said the sculpture’s unveiling marks an exciting milestone for the region.
“This project brings together art, science, and community in a truly unique way,” said Fiona. “The Genestreaming Journey Sculpture is more than an artwork, it’s a conversationstarter about conservation, a bridge between cultures, and a way to deepen our connection to the natural world.”
Fiona hopes the installation will encourage ongoing community engagement in conservation and the arts. “We’re thrilled to host this incredible initiative at Southern Forest Arts,” she said. “Bycollaborating with Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists and local communities, we’re creating something that has the power to inspire and educate for generations to come.
”
