Where is Understory?

Understory is located right in the centre of Northcliffe so its easy to find. Enter through the Northcliffe Visitor Centre.

How long does it take to walk the trail?
A
On average people spend 45 mins to 1 hour enjoying the Understory experience. It depends how long you have to amble. We recommend a slower pace to discover all the artworks and soak in the atmosphere.

It is an easy walk?
A
Understory is an easy walk circuit. At 1.2km in length it is short stroll suitable for low levels of fitness.

Can I bring my dog?
A
No. Dogs (and other pets) are not allowed on the trail. Understory is situated in the Forest Park Nature Reserve. Please leave your pets at home or call us to discuss alternatives.

What makes this experience unique?

Understory is nationally unique. It’s a ‘site specific’ art trail. This means every artwork has been created in response to the unique landscape, people and history of the Southern Forests region.

Who manages the attraction?
A
Understory has been managed by a community based ‘Not For Profit’ organisation called Southern Forest Arts since 2005.

Why was it created?
A
Understory exists to connect people with Nature and creativity. It offers a fresh perspective on the environment in the hope of inspiring change. In connecting to our special place perhaps visitors will feel motivated to care more actively for their own.

Is it suitable for families?

People of all ages enjoy treasure hunts. The young (and young at heart) especially.

Where is Northcliffe?
A
Northcliffe is located in the Southern Forests region of Western Australia’s South West, in the Shire of Manjimup.

What services and facilities are in town for visitors?
A
Northcliffe is a small town. Accommodation is limited so book ahead to enjoy the range of boutique BnB’s located in the forest. For more info visit the Northcliffe Visitor Centre.

How do I get there?
A
By car, Northcliffe is approx 4.5 hours south of Perth, half an hour from Pemberton, 2 hours from Margaret River and just over an hour from Walpole.
There are public buses (run by TransWA) that visit Northcliffe most days. You can walk to town via the Bibbulmun Track, or ride the Munda Biddi trail.

What else can I do in the area?
A
Northcliffe is surrounded by nature’s beauty. You can visit nearby National Parks (D’Entrecasteaux, Shannon, Warren) or go to the beach at Windy Harbour.
In town you can visit the Northcliffe Pioneer Museum or enjoy one of the cafes.
